Nakshi Kasu Mango Vaddanam on a green background

The piece every South Indian bride remembers

There's a moment at almost every South Indian wedding. The bride is nearly ready. Her mom or her aunt comes in with the vaddanam, wraps it around her waist and clicks it shut. Everyone in the room goes quiet for a second.

The vaddanam is one of the heaviest ornaments a bride wears, and a South Indian wedding is rarely without one (Wikipedia). It's grand. It's royal. And it holds that heavy silk saree in place all day long.

But here's the thing nobody tells you. A vaddanam that doesn't fit is miserable. Too tight and you can't sit down. Too loose and it slides around in every photo. So let's get it right.

Types of vaddanam

Belt vaddanam: a solid, structured waist belt. The classic bridal look. Grand and regal.

Flexible vaddanam: made of linked sections, so it moves and curves with your body. More comfortable for long ceremonies and dancing at the sangeet.

Multipurpose vaddanam: our favorite for getting more wear out of your gold. It can be worn as a waist belt and also as a necklace or haram. Two looks, one piece.

Kids vaddanam: a smaller, lighter version for little girls at weddings, half-saree ceremonies and festivals. So cute.

How to measure for your vaddanam

This is the most important part. Grab a soft measuring tape and a friend.

  1. 1.Wear your saree. Measure over the saree you'll actually wear, draped the way you'll wear it. Silk pleats add bulk, so measuring over skin will give you the wrong size.
  2. 2.Find the spot. Measure where the vaddanam will sit, usually at or just above the navel.
  3. 3.Measure snug, not tight. The tape should lie flat without squeezing.
  4. 4.Sit down and measure again. Your waist expands a bit when you sit. Note both numbers.
  5. 5.Send us both numbers. We'll size it so it's comfortable standing and sitting.

Tip: Planning to wear it again after the wedding? Ask us about adding an extra link or two so it can be adjusted later.

What weight to expect

Vaddanam weight depends on width, design, stones and length. Here's a rough guide:

Style Approximate gold weight
Kids vaddanam 70-90 grams
Light or flexible vaddanam 100-125 grams
Classic bridal belt vaddanam 150-200 grams
Heavy bridal vaddanam with stones 250+ grams

Want something lighter? Our UltraLite designs and hollow-back techniques keep the grand look with less gold. Great for comfort and for your budget.

Pick a design that tells your story

  • Lakshmi vaddanam: with Goddess Lakshmi at the center, for blessings and prosperity.
  • Nakshi vaddanam: with fine carved temple work in antique gold.
  • Pachi vaddanam: set with rubies and emeralds for rich color.
  • Kasu vaddanam: made of gold coins, like a kasulaperu for your waist.

Pair it right

Match your vaddanam to your main necklace's style. A Nakshi haram looks best with a Nakshi vaddanam. A Pachi choker shines with a Pachi vaddanam. And add vanki on your arms to complete that temple-goddess look ✨

Order with time to spare

Custom vaddanams take 6 to 8 weeks, depending on the design. Since sizing matters so much, we recommend ordering 3 to 4 months before your wedding.
